Other effective methods of pain relief in labor and delivery that will not affect my ability to push?
I do not really like the idea of massive pain, but I like the idea of not being able to push with the epidural. What other types of pain relief is there, and what worked for you, and if there a midwife who does not believe in pain relief? Water birth is also an option at my hospital.
There are plenty of options for pain relief that do not include medication. They can be as effective as drugs without side effects or potential risks for you and baby as IV medication and epidurals. You're very lucky you have access to Waterbirth as has been proven the most effective form of natural pain relief. Some others include: Pressure Counter / Massage Water Use (bathtub, shower, etc.) Viewing vocalization Movement (remaining upright and mobile) Use of AIDS Childbirth (Birth Ball, kneeling, birth stool, etc) Techniques of deep relaxation (hypnosis included) effective breathing patterns (not talking about breathing hee-hee-hoo) Emotional Support Environmental Conditions (The Research has shown the use of a support person job training as a doula has been shown to reduce the incidence of caesarean section by as much as 50%) Unfortunately, many people think it's a choice between an epidural and suffering from birth, which could not be further from the truth. It is not an all or nothing. When choosing a drug free birth can be a comfortable, enjoyable process. I had two natural deliveries and two were wonderful – nothing I could not handle. But I knew what methods natural for use primarily to prevent pain so that nothing remained to operate. I suggest you invest in a good number of natural childbirth classes (not offered by a hospital that prepare you for anything), but independent classes like Bradley, Hypnobirthing or Hypnobabies. You will learn natural techniques to make your birth comfortable and safe. There is also the option of intravenous drugs, such as Demerol, Nubain and Stadol. However, the downside of these is entering the bloodstream and reach the baby very quickly, increasing the risk of complications such as a rate of decrease of the fetal heart or respiratory problems at birth. On the other hand, do not eliminate the pain, but are designed to change your mental perception. Some women complain that they feel out of focus, rather bewildered and confused to relieve pain.
